Dubizzle, a free online classified advertising service that is popular with expatriates, has had its busiest-ever month.
The site, launched in 2005, recorded more than one million visits in March, the first time in its history. The number is up considerably from an average of around 850,000.
Recent economic forecasts have predicted a significant population decline in Dubai this year, as high employment sectors like construction and property have shed thousands of jobs. EFG-Hermes, a Cairo-based investment bank, said this week that the Emirate’s population could shrink by as much as 17 per cent this year, part of an overall 5 per cent decrease in the UAE’s population.
Dubizzle is commonly used by people moving house or leaving the country to sell their cars and household items. According to data from the Google Insights service, UAE-based searches for the term “Dubizzle” on the Google search engine have spiked, almost doubling in relative volume since late December and reaching an all-time high last week.
